The 22-year-old centre-back is valued at £22million by the Ligue 1 side after an impressive 2019-20 campaign.

‘It is gratifying because there are a lot of teams talking about me,’ Gabriel told L’Equipe.

‘I want to go as high as possible, I came to Europe for that. England or Italy? Both are good championships.

‘I speak a lot to Luis Campos [Lille’s director of football] to see where it is best for me because he has a lot of experience. I also speak with my agents, with Gerard Lopez, with Jose Fonte.

‘Gennaro Gattuso [Napoli’s manager] likes me a lot? I don’t know, we haven’t talked. On the internet, on social networks, there are a lot of things coming out. I do not know what is true. I see every day, “ah Gabriel goes there, then there”.

‘But in fact, we don’t know yet where I’m going to go. Wherever I go it will be to play, to be at the top, at the highest level. And above all in a team that will allow me to go to the Selecao.’

The Selecao is the Brazilian national team which is Gabriel’s dream to play for having made four appearances for Brazil’s U20 side.

Gabriel has starred in a Lille side that finished fourth in Ligue 1 this term, helping them secure Europa League football next season and he has been a long term target for Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti.

However, Napoli have reportedly swept in to finalise an agreement with the French outfit over a deal worth £20million plus bonuses according to Footmercato.

The report also claims that the 22-year-old is also ‘thrilled’ to have agreed personal terms which will see him pick up an annual salary of £1,8m over five years.

The move is set to go ahead on September 1 when the Italian transfer window is due to open but despite the deal looking done, the Toffees will still hope to hi-jack the transfer as they look to bolster their defensive option this summer.

Director of football Marcel Brands has been looking to land Gabriel since February.

As well as Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal have also been monitoring the Brazilian’s situation over the last few months.

With Jan Vertonghen set to depart White Hart Lane at the end of June they are keen to find a replacement for the long serving centre-back whilst Mikel Arteta is keen to solve their issues in central defence.

Gabriel joined Lille in 2017 after arriving from Brazil and has since gone on to make 52 appearances.
