Arsenal backed to sack Mikel Arteta and appoint Brendan Rodgers to fight relegation battle

Arsenal: Why are they struggling under Arteta?

Arsenal should sack Mikel Arteta and attempt to bring in Brendan Rodgers as his replacement, according to Gunners fan and former Tottenham striker Darren Bent. Arteta has seen his Arsenal side lose seven of their 12 Premier League games so far this season, including their last four top-flight matches at home for the first time since 1959. Technical director Edu backed the Spaniard to turn things around when he spoke to the press on Monday.

However, Bent believes the players are not listening to Arteta anymore which means they cannot implement his tactics on the field.

Arsenal are 15th in the table and Bent believes they could be in a relegation battle if things don’t change soon.

Bent said on talkSPORT: “I would love to see Arsenal go – I know it’s never going to happen because they don’t do business that way – in January go: ‘Listen, what do you need? Here’s the money, go and buy the players’.

“But right now for me, it looks like these players have switched off from listening to his ideas.

“Now obviously you’ve got a manager there who I like as a coach, I think he’s a very, very good coach but if the players have switched off and are no longer listening to the ideas, that’s going to go from bad to even worse and we might end up being in a relegation battle.

“However good the coach is, if the players are not buying into his ideas, then what happens next?

“You can’t just keep having a manager there for the sake of ‘he’s a good manager’ – the players are not listening to him anymore.

“You look at their next three – Southampton, Everton, Manchester City. Imagine they get beat all three or lose two and win one.”

Brendan Rodgers led Leicester to a fifth-placed finish last season and the Foxes currently sit third in the table.

Bent doubts if the Northern Irishman would want to leave the King Power but thinks he would be perfect for Arsenal.

He added: “Off the top of my head I don’t think he’d leave where he’s at now but I love Brendan Rodgers, I absolutely love him. I think as a coach, he always seems to improve squads.

“You look at what he’s done to this Leicester team, they’re playing fantastic football.

“I think he’d be a very good addition, whether he’d Leicester now I don’t think so. But he’s one I’d love to have in the building.

“As I said I like Arteta and I think he’s a very good manager but if the players have switched off and they’re no longer listening to his ideas and don’t believe in what he’s saying, then you can’t get rid of the players, so something’s got to change.”
