Arsenal confident Thomas Partey will sign because of recent transfer developments

Arsenal are confident they will sign Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid because of recent transfer developments, reports say. Mikel Arteta is eager to sign the Ghana international. And he knows a fee of £44.5million will get the deal done due to a clause in the player’s contract.

Arsenal have enjoyed a solid start to the transfer window, with Arteta signing three players so far.

Willian was the first to arrive, with the Brazil international choosing to leave Chelsea behind after seven successful years at Stamford Bridge.

Gabriel Magalhaes was the second with the young Samba star moving from Ligue 1 outfit Lille in a £22m deal, with Pablo Mari’s loan turned into a permanent deal.

Now, Arsenal aren’t done there. They want to sign another midfielder and Partey is their top target, having impressed for Atletico over the years with his slick performances in the middle of the park.

So far, the consensus has been that the midfielder is out of their price range.

Yet Bleacher Report say Arsenal are confident they’ll get a deal for Partey done due to a raft of sales that will help them meet the £44.5m figure they need to stump up.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos is likely to join Napoli, having fallen down Arteta’s pecking order since the Spaniard’s appointment.

Arsenal have got Henrikh Mkhitaryan off the books, with the Armenia international saving them a small fortune in wages as a result of his departure on a free transfer.

Lucas Torreira is looking likelier to join Fiorentina with each passing day and he, too, will help inject some funds into the squad.

And Arsenal could also cash in on Alexandre Lacazette, with Atletico long having an interest in the France international.

The north London giants feel Partey wouldn’t be a risky signing due to the work that has gone into scouting the 27-year-old, who made 35 La Liga appearances for Atletico last term.

And whether they’re able to make him their fourth summer signing is something only time will tell.

Meanwhile, former Gunners defender Armand Traore recently compared Partey to club legend Patrick Vieira.

He said of the Atletico star: “I would strengthen the central defence.

“I wouldn’t mind a guy like Partey in there sitting in front of the defence or somebody a bit angry.

“He [Partey] reminds me a bit of your Gilberto [Silva] or [Patrick] Vieira [in terms of] somebody who can go out there and give it a go.

“They’re playing good football. I’m really impressed with Arsenal at the moment, if I have to be honest. I think Arteta has done a great job and I can only see them doing well in the future.”

Traore also gave some advice to Arsenal youngster Bukayo Saka, urging him to stay at the club and become a Gunners legend.

“I think he’s an unbelievable little player. He’s very exciting and I enjoy watching him play,” he said.

“The advice I would give him would be stay surrounded by good people because I’ve suffered a lot from that [and] I’ve made really bad choices in my career.

“If you’re not surrounded by the right people, you will go downhill from there.

“I would tell him to stay at Arsenal. Now, if I had the chance, I would not have left Arsenal and I think I would have stayed for a few more years.

“Be patient and enjoy every time you play and work hard and be professional. Talent is not enough. I used to think that when I was younger and how arrogant I was to think that.

“If you can couple the talent with the hard work, he will be at Arsenal for the next decade, probably more.”
