Arsenal fan names baby after Mesut Ozil following challenge from German star

An Arsenal supporter has named his newborn baby after midfielder Mesut Ozil following a promise he made to the player on Twitter in March.

Gunners megafan Jack Robinson tweeted Ozil five months ago saying: "@MesutOzil1088 wife is expecting in july she said if i can get you to reply i can name the kid Ozil, dont let me down"

Four days later the German international responded, replying: "It's a deal mate. I don't let you down. Now it's your turn. I want to see the birth certificate of your kid in July."

And on Monday afternoon Mr Robinson shared a picture of his baby girl holding an Ozil shirt, along with the message: "@MesutOzil1088 Deal completed, worth every second. Mara Özil Robinson. Mom and baby girl doing great. Thanks again for an amazing lasting memory."

Ozil later replied: "Wow, can't believe you really did it man. Huge congratulations to you and the little family, Jack."

Supporters reacted with delight to the exchange, and the tweet has gone viral on social media.

It is believed Mr Robinson's partner gave birth in the American city of St Louis, and it appears she was willing to go along with her spouse's wishes regarding the name.

Ozil splits opinion among Gunners fans, and his time at the club may soon be coming to an end.

He has been frozen out of the team by his manager Mikel Arteta since football returned after lockdown, and has not played a minute ever since.

Ozil has been linked with a move to the likes of Turkish side Fenerbahce, with his lucrative £350,000-a-week contract set to expire at the end of next season, and it remains to be seen if he kicks a ball for Arsenal again.
