Arsenal fans hail Nuno Tavares "funniest player ever" after ill-fated knee slide

Arsenal supporters have hailed Nuno Tavares as the "funniest player ever" after he almost ruined his opening goal against Manchester United with a disastrous knee slide on the Emirates turf.

The Portuguese defender, who signed from Benfica last summer, scored his first goal for the club following some abysmal United defending and looked to lap up the applause of the Emirates crowd.

Running towards the corner of the flag, the 22-year-old decided to jump onto his knees but the surface might not have been as moist as he expected – sending him flying onto his back to the amusement of both his team-mates and fans.

An Arsenal fan joked: "Nuno tavares is one of the funniest players i’ve ever seen I’m so happy for him."

With a second adding: "Tavares scoring a goal just to follow it up with that knee slide really sums him up."

A third laughed: "Don’t know what’s more embarrassing the defending or the knee slide."

With a fourth writing: "Tbf i’m happy for that nuno but that’s one s**** kneeslide."

Arsenal went 2-0 up via a Bukayo Saka penalty, and secured a 3-1 victory thanks to Granit Xhaka after Cristiano Ronaldo had found the net and Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told BBC Match of the Day : "It was a crucial game for us after two-and-a-half days to recover from a big performance and result at Stamford Bridge.

"We wanted to win again and we knew how important our fans would be. They really made it happen with the energy they played with and the spirit they have in the team.

"We wanted to start really fast and make sure we scored first and get the people behind us.

"The last 15 minutes of the first half and first 15 minutes of the second we didn't control the game and we need some luck. We had Aaron make some important saves and they missed a penalty, which is rare for the quality they have.

"We will learn from that but after that the response of the team was magnificent.

"You can't expect to win every match as that is only afforded to one or two teams in the league. We have to earn our right to win games and need a bit of luck, and today we had it."
