Arsenal were reportedly in talks with Nuno Espirito Santo over replacing Mikel Arteta before the latter pulled them out of their nightmare run of form.
Arteta’s position as Gunners boss was hanging by a thread amid a full-blown crisis which left them hovering above the relegation zone throughout November and December.
The north London club lost six out of eight matches in all competitions, plummeting to 15th in the Premier League table and crashing out of the Carabao Cup.
Reports suggested Arteta was on the verge of losing his job, but a vital 3-1 win over Chelsea on Boxing Day proved the catalyst for a resurgence.
Since that triumph, Arsenal have recorded back-to-back victories against Brighton and West Brom in the Premier League and beaten Newcastle in the third round of the FA Cup – all without conceding a single goal.
According to The Sun, Gunners chiefs were considering replacing Arteta with Nuno before he pulled them out of their alarming slump.
It is believed the Portuguese’s super agent Jorge Mendes held talks with Arsenal about taking over in north London, despite only signing a new three-year contract with Wolves a few months earlier.
Mendes is understood to be “actively searching” for a new club for Nuno, who is keen to remain in England if possible.
He has enjoyed great success at Wolves since moving to Molineux in 2017, gaining promotion to the Premier League as Championship winners at the first time of asking.
The West Midlands outfit have since enjoyed back-to-back seventh-place finishes in the top flight under his management.

However, Arsenal officials have now ended talks with Nuno following Arteta’s recent revival which has moved them to within nine points of the top four – having been touted as potential relegation candidates just one month ago.
And the Gunners could climb even further up the table this month, with favourable home outings against Crystal Palace and Newcastle to come next.
