Arsenal loanee Cedric sends timely reminder to Mikel Arteta after injury blow
Arsenal star Cedric Soares is reportedly determined to fight for a place in Mikel Arteta’s squad next season. The Portugal international has spent the second half of this campaign on loan at Fulham but a lengthy injury to Takehiro Tomiyasu could give him a chance next term.
Tomiyasu suffered what Arsenal described as a ‘significant knee injury’ in March. He was immediately ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.
That left Ben White as the only recognised right-back in Arteta’s squad, a position he has only started playing regularly this season. Arsenal initially stated that the club would be working with Tomiyasu in order to get him fit for the start of pre-season in July.
However, Arteta hinted in early May that the Japan star is set for even longer on the sidelines. Arteta said Tomiyasu was initially “out for three-and-a-half months” but “maybe now six months”.

That would mean he would not return to action until at least mid-September. Arsenal were linked with signing a right-back in January, with Real Valladolid youngster Ivan Fresneda on their radar.
Manchester City’s Joao Cancelo and Leicester’s Timothy Castagne are also rumoured to be options for the Gunners. But the Evening Standard says Cedric is not giving up hope of forcing his way back into Arteta’s plans.
Cedric made just two substitute appearances for Arsenal in the Premier League this season before moving to Fulham. His only start came in the Carabao Cup loss at home to Brighton.
The 31-year-old has continued to struggle for game time since moving to Craven Cottage. He has made just three starts and has been an unused substitute in eight matches.

Cedric still has a year remaining on his contract at the Emirates. The Standard claims Cedric earns up to £100,000 a week from his Gunners deal.
Cedric initially joined Arsenal on loan in January 2020 before making the move permanent that summer. He has only once reached double figures in terms of starts in the Premier League for the north London club.
That came last season, when he featured 21 times in all in the top flight. Tomiyasu struggled with injuries in the second half of his first campaign in London and has again been hampered with issues throughout his second.
White has excelled in his first full season at right-back. However, the addition of Champions League football means Arteta needs further depth in that position.
