Arsenal could be set for a late swoop to take Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna to the Emirates.
The Gunners have endured a tough start to the Premier League, and Mikel Arteta's side sit bottom of the table after three games.
And Arteta's defence has fallen under criticism after the Gunners have conceded nine goals already this campaign, five of which came against Manchester City on Saturday.
This is despite the Spaniard already spending £50million on the services of Ben White.
And, according to The Athletic, Arsenal could look to Bologna's Tomiyasu to further strengthen their backline before Tuesday evenings deadline.
The young Japanese centre-half has impressed for the Serie A outfit, earning plaudits from both sides of North London.
His versatility at the back as a centre-half or as a right-back is believed to be one of the highest valued traits.
Arsenal are looking to improve the right-hand side of their defence, but his ability to operate in the middle of the park has also been taken into consideration by the North London side.
Tottenham had also registered interest in the 22-year-old, but their move for Emerson Royal has left Arsenal with a clear run towards the Japanese international.

Hector Bellerin looks set to join Sevilla-based side Real Betis on a season-loan long.
While Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who looked set to leave, has been dropped from first-team training after he posted an Instagram story explaining his desire to leave on Monday.
