Arsenal were ruthless in the January transfer window as they cancelled the contracts of Mesut Ozil and Shkodran Mustafi in order to free up some money on the wage bill and trim the squad, but Gunners hero Kevin Campbell believes they could do the same thing to David Luiz.
Arsenal are set for a busy summer transfer window, having used the January window to get rid of players not in Mikel Arteta’s plans.
The Gunners allowed Mustafi and Ozil to leave – for Schalke and Fenerbahce respectively.
Both left for nothing having had their contracts terminated, and have left behind a fair chunk of the wage bill for Arteta to use in the summer.
But Campbell believes they could free up even more space before the upcoming window by allowing Luiz to leave.
The centre-back is out of contract at the end of the season, and will be turning 34 before the season ends.
And Campbell believes that because of Arsenal’s quality at the back, they could do with letting the veteran leave after two years at the Emirates.
Arsenal will have William Saliba back this summer after his loan at OGC Nice, as well as Rob Holding, Gabriel Magalhaes and Pablo Mari.
Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell explained that he thinks Arsenal chiefs Edu and Arteta will know what they want to do with Luiz.
“There is an opportunity to look at that in the summer, ” he said
“They might be able to bring two or three players in if they get Luiz off the wage bill, he will be on a good whack.
“Is it something Mikel Arteta is looking at? I am sure the club is looking at it.
“I think David Luiz got a raw deal in the Wolves game and that cost us.
“Luiz has the experience and that is key because there are a few young players who need guidance.
“But, come the summer, Gabriel will have been at Arsenal for a season, Holding will have been there another season and Saliba will be coming back from Nice.
“It is just a matter of which way Edu and Arteta want to go.
“The ball is definitely in Arsenal’s court right now.”
