Arsenal have reportedly reached a stalemate with Atletico Madrid in their transfer pursuit of Thomas Partey.
The Gunners have been linked with the Ghana international for most of the summer but have been unable to find a breakthrough.
Mikel Arteta is keen to add some solidity to his midfield and sees the 27-year-old as the perfect addition.
Partey has a £45million release clause attached to his contract but the Gunners are yet to meet that figure.
And, according to Sky Sports journalist Matteo Moretto , the Premier League club are unwilling to pay that amount.
In addition to paying £45m to sign the midfielder, Arsenal will also have to stump up over £200,000-a-week in wages.
While the Gunners received a nice windfall after qualifying for next season’s Europa League by winning the FA Cup, they are still having to be stringent with their finances.
The club have already made 55 staff redundant because of the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
And Arsenal's executive team also agreed to waive more than a third of their salaries over the next 12 months.
So paying such a large package for Partey is understandably not a decision that is being taken lightly.
Add in the fact that Arsenal are set to pay £27m to sign Gabriel Magalhaes from Lille and it leaves less room for further big spending.
The Gunners would love to get Mesut Ozil’ s £350,000-a-week salary off their books but the German still has a year left on his contract and does not look like leaving this summer.

Meanwhile, Partey’s international coach, CK Akonnor, has advised the midfielder to stay with Atletico so he can play Champions League football again next season.
He said: “Honestly, I wouldn’t want him to move to Arsenal because with Atletico, he will always play Champions League football.
"His position is guaranteed and he will always play. With Arsenal, I’m not too sure."
