Arsenal’s ‘worst ever’ signing £72m record flop Pepe could be leaving on loan

Arsenal's "worst ever" signing Nicolas Pepe could soon leave the club as the £72million flop nears a loan departure.

The Ivorian winger remains the club's record signing after joining from Lille back in the summer of 2019, but has struggled for consistency since arriving at the Emirates Stadium. His nightmare spell in England now appears to be coming to an end, though, with The Athletic reporting he is expected to leave the club before the end of the transfer window.

The report also states that talks are underway between Arsenal and French side Nice over a potential season-long loan move.

Discussions are said to be ongoing, with all parties involved hopeful of reaching an agreement. It is understood that the Gunners' plans to sign a new winger are reliant on Pepe leaving the club.

Arsenal fans have welcomed the news of the 27-year-old's impending departure, having been left underwhelmed by his performances over the last three seasons.

One supporter tweeted: "Pepe is a good footballer… He's Arsenal's worst ever value-for-money signing… Pepe died so Arsenal could live. Respect." Meanwhile, another added: “Nicolas Pepe was the worst value for money transfer ever!"

Since joining Arsenal, Pepe has made 112 appearances for the club across all competitions, scoring just 27 times and providing a further 21 assists.

In his three years in the Premier League, he has failed to contribute more than 11 combined goals and assists in a single season.

After starting just eight matches across all competitions last season, Pepe has yet to feature so far this campaign and has been an unused sub in Arsenal's opening two league matches.

It is thought his departure on loan would allow Mikel Arteta's side to complete a move for a new winger and take their summer spending over the £120million mark.

Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Marquinhos have all joined the club already this summer, with 13 days remaining before the transfer window shuts.
