  • Blues boss Frank Lampard is looking to strengthen the left-back area this year

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has placed Atalanta left-back Robin Gosens at the top of his transfer list, according to reports in Germany.

The 26-year-old has played a major role in the Serie A club’s successful season in both Italy and Europe, with the Bergamo club sitting in third place and looking ahead to a Champions League quarter-final against PSG.

Often used as a wing-back in a 3-5-2 formation, Gosens has scored nine league goals and registered eight assists for Atalanta this term.

And German news outlet Kicker claim that Lampard is keen on signing the Dutch-German defender, ahead of Leicester City full-back Ben Chilwell.

The west London club are among a host of top European clubs looking to pen Gosens’ signature this summer.

The same report says that Juventus are willing to pay the £27million asking price slapped on by Atalanta, while Inter Milan are keen to add Gosens to their squad having already signed Dortmund right wing-back Achraf Hakimi this summer.

There is also significant interest from German clubs, with Schalke long-term admirers of the 26-year-old.

David Wagner’s side reportedly made a bid for Gosens last summer and agreed personal terms with the player but baulked at Atalanta’s £10million asking price.

Hertha Berlin could also put in a bid for the left-back, with the club owner Lars Windhorst looking to invest heavily in their squad this summer.

Gosens is eligible to play for both the Netherlands and Germany at international level and has passports from both countries.

It is believed that German national team coach Joachim Loew asked the 26-year-old to train with his squad ahead of the planned European Championships this summer.

Juventus and Inter Milan are among the clubs also looking at signing the 26-year-old

A move to a major European club would boost Gosens’ chance of representing Germany for the rescheduled tournament in the summer of 2021.

Gosens joined Atalanta from Heracles Almelo three years ago in a deal worth less than £1million.

Chelsea boss Lampard has identified the left-back position as a key area to strengthen this summer, with Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri doing little to convince the Blues head coach that they are worthy of starting spots.

The Blues have already signed attacking duo Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner from Ajax and RB Leipzig respectively and look set to make Bayer Leverkusen forward Kai Havertz their third summer signing.
