Barcelona are closing in on a deal for Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta, it has been reported.

Azpilicueta has been the subject of much speculation this summer, with it having been reported that the Spain international wishes to return to his native country.

Barcelona have remained in the picture for his signature throughout the summer and, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, are wanting to speed up negotiations over his transfer.

The full-back is said to be awaiting Chelsea’s approval over a two-year deal that would keep him at the Catalan club until 2024.

The deal will also have the option of an extra year, Spanish publication Sport claim.

Sport are more bullish in their reporting over the deal, stating a fee of between £3.5m and £4.5m will be the price paid for the Chelsea player.

Josko Gvardiol (R) is reported to be the target Chelsea have identified to replace Azpilicueta

It has been reported that the main hold up for the deal is the ongoing saga surrounding a replacement for Azpilicueta.

It has been suggested that RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol has been identified as the prime target to replace the Spaniard.

Thomas Tuchel has been keen to strengthen Chelsea’s defensive areas having lost Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger, to Barcelona and Real Madrid respectively, on free transfers earlier this summer.

Meanwhile, Chelsea continue to chase Sevilla defender Jules Kounde, with the west London club having had a bid rebuffed earlier this week but are said to have now agreed a fee with the Spanish club.

Kounde has been a long-term target of the club, with Chelsea having attempted to acquire his services last summer.
