Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was reportedly left ‘surprised’ by Ousmane Dembele’s decision to reject a potential move to Anfield earlier this summer.
Dembele looks likely to leave Barcelona before Monday’s transfer deadline, with Manchester United considering a loan move for the 23-year-old after missing out on Borussia Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho.
He has failed to live up to his £132million price tag at the Nou Camp, scoring just 19 goals in 75 appearances amid a series of injury and punctuality problems.
United seem prepared to take a chance on the France winger, nevertheless, while Sport are reporting that Liverpool also want to sign him.
The Spanish outlet also claim Dembele was on Klopp’s radar earlier in the window, only to snub a potential switch to Anfield and leave the Reds boss surprised.
Liverpool’s formidable attacking triumvirate of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane may explain why he did so, as Klopp would not be able to guarantee him a regular starting place in his side.
It remains to be seen whether the Premier League champions beat United to his signature before the transfer window closes on Monday – and ex-Reds midfielder Danny Murphy is eager for them to do so.
“Dembele would be a fantastic signing for Liverpool,” Murphy said.
“He’s not had the best time at Barcelona, but clearly has an abundance of talent and the ability to win games by himself.
“If he can recapture his belief in his ability, then Liverpool would have a formidable front three with him, Mane and Salah.
“When playing to his potential, I think he would edge Firmino out the first team.
“Firmino is the type of player that would raise his own game and everyone’s around him if Dembele came in to the team.
