Barcelona star Pedri, widely held to be one of the club’s finest young talents since Lionel Messi, faces an uncertain future with less than a year left to run on his contract in Catalonia. As one of Europe’s brightest young prospects, it is no surprise that Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Manchester City are both reportedly monitoring his situation, which is as yet unresolved.

Pedri played over 60 games for club and country last season in what was a mammoth breakthrough year for the teenager.

Having moved to the Camp Nou from Las Palmas last summer in a fairly lowkey deal, the midfielder established himself as one of Ronald Koeman’s key men.

Building on his great club form, he was one of Euro 2020’s standout performers, earning the Young Player of the Tournament award for his exploits with Spain.

His importance to Barca is only set to increase, with Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann both departing the club during the summer transfer window.

Although his contract at the Catalan side has an option to extend for one further year, it is yet to be extended, while Liverpool and City remain on high alert.

At first glance, the Reds may have the upper hand given that Pep Guardiola has shown a reluctance to hurt his former side while in charge at the Etihad.

With Ansu Fati reportedly offered their way by agent Jorge Mendes, the City boss reportedly instructed Txiki Begiristain to steer clear in fear of hurting Barca.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has no such loyalties, and having failed to replace Gini Wijnaldum, there could be a spot ready and waiting for him in 2022.

Both clubs are keeping tabs on developments, although most likely in hope more than anything else.

Having played a remarkable amount of football at such a young age, Barca are almost certain to put a tempting offer on the table at some point, then it will be in the teenager’s hands.

Interested parties may maintain slim hopes that Pedri will be put off by the financial chaos which has marred the past few months at Barcelona.

Furthermore, the fact he did not come through the La Masia academy means he has no particular loyalties to the club, having only transferred from Las Palmas just over a year ago.

As a result of Barca’s struggles, however, he is likely to be called upon as one of the key long-term members of the side which is undoubtedly an attractive proposition as a young Spaniard.

All of the above is set to play out over the coming months, with heavyweights across the continent waiting to pounce if the relationship between player and club goes south.
