Barcelona believe Chelsea have made a ‘big offer’ for young midfielder Ilaix Moriba, according to reports. Moriba has entered the final year of his contract at Barca and is claimed to have rejected an offer of a renewal. A decision could be made as early as this week on his future.

Moriba made 18 first-team appearances for Barca last season, including 14 in La Liga.

But Spanish outlet Sport reckons his future could be away from the Nou Camp.

The report claims there is a gap financially between what Barca can offer and what the player’s representatives are asking for.

Moriba’s camp want the teenager to earn around £2.5million per season but Barca are only prepared to offer £1.7m.

Barca plan to hand the player a first-team squad number for the upcoming campaign and believe their offer is fair.

However, Sport says Barca are certain the player has an offer from elsewhere and believe it to be Chelsea.

Bayern Munich also have interest but Chelsea would be able to potentially triple Moriba’s current wages.

Barca will continue in their attempts to get Moriba to sign a new deal but are not holding out much hope.

The La Liga giants will have to decide whether to cash in on the player this summer or let him leave at the end of his contract in 2022 for nothing.

Barca president Joan Laporta spoke about Moriba’s future on Monday.

Laporta said the club cannot allow players who have come through the system such as Moriba to leave at such an early time in their careers.

“We will try to make sure that his case is not repeated anymore,” Laporta said.

“He has one year left on his contract and does not want to accept the club’s conditions.

“We do not accept that and we want to send a message to the team.

“If you do not want to renew, we have other solutions. What we don’t want are players made at La Masia who don’t want to renew.

“He’s a player we’ve given opportunities, but the club is above all. I would like you [Moriba] to think again.

“We cannot allow him to be promoted and then leave. We won’t accept that with any player.”
