Manchester United have reportedly rebuffed Barcelona’s hopes of signing Diogo Dalot amid his central role in Erik ten Hag’s rebuild. The La Liga giants are plotting a January move for Dalot but face the arduous task of prizing him away from Old Trafford as he enjoys his best season at the club yet.

Dalot has started all 16 of Ten Hag’s games in charge of United, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams have suffered early-season injury woes. He has cemented his spot as first-choice right back and was never going to be allowed to leave easily, especially midway through the campaign.

And, according to Sport, it would be ‘practically impossible’ for Barcelona to recruit the 23-year-old in January after they enquired about his availability. Xavi Hernandez wants a minimum of two signings in the transfer window to bolster Barca’s title challenge, identifying right-back as a problem position.

Sergio Roberto has primarily operated in the position this season, with centre-halves Ronald Araujo and Jules Kounde deputising. But the report claims Xavi is keen to add a natural right-back to his squad, and Dalot seems to be at the top of the agenda.

United have unsurprisingly swivelled Barcelona and sent them back to the Nou Camp, though, after Dalot emerged as a key fixture in Ten Hag’s ever-developing side. The Portugal international has overcome injury issues in the last two years and started 24 games last season after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking spelt bad news for Wan-Bissaka.

He’s been even more important this term and is repaying Ten Hag’s faith with some of the best form of his career. Meanwhile, United are looking to offload Wan-Bissaka and recruit competition for Dalot, reportedly in the form of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong.

Dalot is technically in the final year of his United contract, but there is an option to extend it for a further year, and he is said to be ready to commit his future to the club with a long-term deal. AC Milan, AS Roma, Atletico Madrid, and Juventus are also monitoring his situation, but he is off the market.

Dalot scored his first European goal for United in Thursday’s 3-0 win against Sheriff Tiraspol at Old Trafford; the memorable milestone was one of many highlights of his season so far. And even with Wan-Bissaka back in training after his lengthy lay-off, it would be surprising if the Red Devils’ number 20 didn’t remain ever-present before the World Cup break.
