Barnsley vs Chelsea predicted line-ups: Team news ahead of FA Cup fixture tonight

Chelsea seek to extend their unbeaten run under Thomas Tuchel when they travel to Barnsley tonight for their FA Cup fifth-round tie.

The Blues are clear favourites ahead of the meeting, with three victories and one draw since Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard, meaning they have climbed to fifth in the Premier League.

Chelsea overcame Sheffield United 2-1 on Monday evening and have been largely untroubled in their FA Cup campaign with recent home wins against Morecambe and Luton Town.

Barnsley are unbeaten in three Championship matches but sit mid-table with 10 wins and 11 losses from 27 games.

This will be the two sides’ second meeting of the season, with Chelsea having won 6-0 in a League Cup tie in September. However, history is on Barnsley side’s, having beaten the Blues in this competition twice – 4-0 in 1989 and 1-0 in the 2008 quarter-finals.

What is the team news?

Since taking over from Lampard, Tuchel has used a back five that has done the side well, but he may opt for a four-man defence here. Thiago Silva will be out as he continues to suffer from a hamstring injury, while Timo Werner may miss the game after a knock against Sheffield United, along with Kai Havertz who was sidelined for the win at Bramall Lane.

Winger Christian Pulisic also missed Monday night’s match for personal reasons and so it is uncertain whether he will feature in the starting XI. Up top, Tammy Abraham will be hoping to play and build on his goalscoring, having done so six times in the Premier League and five in cup competitions this season.

Barnsley have almost had two weeks off due to their league game against Derby County being called off last week because of a waterlogged pitch.

Valerien Ismael will be hoping to field some players who are back from injury, but Aapo Halme, Ben Williams and Liam Kitching are likely to miss out. Leading the line will probably be Cauley Woodrow, who has scored nine goals in 23 Championship appearances this season, while Victor Adeboyejo and Dominik Frieser will likely be either side.
