Ben White branded ‘£50m disaster’ despite lucky escape in Arsenal win at Burnley

Criticism has been aimed at Ben White after what was considered a poor performance from the Arsenal defender against Burnley.

The Gunners ran out 1-0 winners at Turf Moor in the Premier League clash thanks to a wonderful free-kick buried by Martin Ødegaard.

But beyond the three points, concerns were raised about the display of White, 23, whose mistake led to a penalty that was eventually overturned by VAR.

Online some Arsenal fans took aim at the former Brighton centre-back.

One said: “That's a dive. Absolute stinker from Ben White. So far it looks like Ben White is a £50m disaster.”

Another said: “Ben White has been such a liability in defence. He’s not good with the ball at his feet.”

A third added: “Fairs, that’s 100% not a pen, Ben white can f**k right off though.”

However, a more reasoned response claimed that the fuss over the youngster’s performance was an ‘overreaction.

They said: “Ben White won 5/8 headers. Gabriel won 4/10. I don't believe Ben White was good today, he was decent. Needs to work on his positioning and get used to his teammates more. A lot of overreaction.”

Mikel Arteta spoke before the match in Lancashire about the importance of the defender.

He said: “He needs to play his game," the Spaniard told reporters of White. "I fully trust him.

"He knows what he is going to face, not just him but every defender in the Premier League against any opponent. You are going to be exposed and he needs to do what he is good at.

"The things that he can improve, he can improve them, but when you jump against Wood 10 times in the air, with a ball flying in the air, it is pretty difficult to win every duel to be fair.”

The Gunner’s win means they have jumped to 12th in the Premier League table, on six points.

The victory over Sean Dyche’s men was just their second all season.
