Benfica have underlined their desire to keep Chelsea target Enzo Fernandez by proposing a new contract.
The club put out an official statement on Thursday in response to reports they were willing to let the 21-year-old go if his £106m release clause was met, saying: ‘We insist our intention is to keep Enzo here until the end of the season’.
Chelsea remain keen to sign Fernandez but must meet the clause and convince the Argentina midfielder of their project.

The Benfica star only arrived at the club in June, following a move from River Plate in his native Argentina, but has already drawn the attention of numerous top clubs.
He went on to star for the Albiceleste in Qatar, and was key figure in their World Cup win after starting each game in the knockout stages, after substitute appearances in their first two matches.
So far for the Lisbon-based outfit, Fernandez has managed three goals and five assists in 24 games in all competitions, in addition to the goal and assist he also managed in Qatar.

The 21-year-old was also honoured with the World Cup Young Player of the Year award following his exploits with his country.
The Stamford Bridge club want to add midfielders this window but have held more positive talks over a new deal for N’Golo Kante who is free to sign a pre-contract with foreign clubs from January 1.
Andrey Santos was tied up by team-mates
It was only this week that Potter confirmed Kante will not be available for selection until the end of February or start of March as the midfielder recovers from hamstring surgery.
Brazilian Andrey Santos arrived in London on Thursday to undergo his Chelsea medical ahead of signing from Vasco da Gama.
Despite his age, Santos has already made 37 appearances for the Brazilian second-tier side, scoring eight goals along the way. The midfielder has also been capped at under-20 level for Brazil, he has emerged as on of the hottest talents in football after guiding his side to a fourth-placed finish in the league.
And the 18-year-old’s team-mates were clearly keen for him to stay at the club, resorting to tying him up in jest in order to prevent him from joining Chelsea.
