Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke has hit out at Manchester United legends Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves and warned that Jadon Sancho will no longer be allowed to leave the club this summer.
Michael Zorc, Dortmund’s sporting director, spoke on Monday to insist that Sancho would remain with the Bundesliga side for another year because United had not met their £108million valuation.
Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves claimed the German outfit were “bluffing” and will definitely allow the England international to leave.
Watzke was quizzed about those comments and he hit back to question the United legends’ knowledge of the situation.
“I read that too,” he told German media. “This is what experts like Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves claim.
“They were great footballers, and they are football experts. But I don’t know if they are transfer experts too. That Sancho stays with BVB is set in stone.”
It is claimed the only way Sancho can force through a move to Old Trafford is by handing in a transfer request.
Former Dortmund stars Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang took matters into their own hands when they wanted to leave.
But Watzke is confident Sancho will not kick up such a fuss after publicly committing his future to Dortmund.
“I don’t see this danger at all,” he added. “At the test match in Altach – as you know – Jadon himself explained how ‘happy he is in this special bunch’.
“We have a good exchange with his advisors. We acknowledge that Jadon responds very well.
“And he recognises that we have a good team that gives him a lot of fun playing football. He shows this joy every day now. In training. In the game.”
Watzke’s reaction came after Hargreaves said: “Bluff. I’m calling their bluff.
“I think he will be a Manchester United player in a pretty short time. They’re trying to get a bit more money out of it. That’s the nature of the beast.
“Obviously they know United are really interested, they’re pretty heavy into negotiations. I think they’re bluffing. They know he’s going to leave at that price.”
And Scholes added: “‘They’re [Dortmund] just after a little bit more money out of it, aren’t they?’ said Scholes.
“He’s a great player. We’re talking £108m. That’s a lot of money to go to.
“The one thing I would say is that Manchester United were desperate for Erling Haaland, and they didn’t go the extra mile and pay the money for him there. Will they do this with Sancho?
“I think they will. If Ole desperately wants him, I think they’ll get him.”
