Bruno Guimaraes will not miss Carabao Cup final vs Man Utd despite Newcastle red

Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes won't be suspended for the Carabao Cup final despite getting sent off against Southampton.

The Magpies reached their first cup final since 1999 by beating the Saints 2-1 on Tuesday (January 31) night, winning 3-1 on aggregate. It wasn't plain sailing, though, especially after Guimaraes was shown a straight red card with 10 minutes to go.

That sparked fears amongst the Toon Army that he'd miss the next round, i.e. the final. The Brazilian midfielder would be a big miss for Eddie Howe with Manchester United expected to be their opponents at Wembley on February 26.

However, Guimaraes will instead miss Newcastle's next three Premier League matches against West Ham, Bournemouth and Liverpool, as the rules state players are suspended across all domestic competitions.

They were changed in the 2019/20 season so that yellow cards only applied to the specific competition, but reds still apply to all. That will have come as a massive relief to all at St James' Park.

Should the rule be changed? Let us know in the comments section.

Taking to Twitter after the match, Guimaraes wrote: "Huge happiness to be in my first final with this shirt. Every day I'm sure I made the best decision coming here.

"First year and first final. Sad for the red card, the first in my career, but these are situations that occur during games. Thanks for the support. Wembley, here we go."

Newcastle will learn who they'll face tonight (February 1) when Erik ten Hag's United welcome Nottingham Forest to Old Trafford for the second leg of their tie. The Red Devils have a 3-0 aggregate lead at the half-way point.
