Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s father has praised is son for recovering from several setbacks after scoring his first England goal against Wales.

The Everton forward scored the opener on his international debut for the Three Lions, heading home Jack Grealish’s opener as Gareth Southgate’s side won 3-0 at Wembley on Thursday night.

The goal caps off a remarkable rise in form for the 23-year-old striker, with the man who was playing at Stalybridge Celtic six years ago scoring his tenth goal of the season for both club and country after just a month of action.

Karlda Lewin reminisced about previous setbacks and praised his son’s bouncebackabaility

And the player’s father, Karlda Lewin, posted an emotional Facebook message to his son on the night he scored his first England goal.

The post read: ‘I remember him not making the England Victory Shield Squad at U16s, certain coaches and managers not rating him. Having to take a crying 6 year old boy home from his first trial as he was too shy to play. 

‘When knocked down, he gets back up. You’re not allowed to stay down around here anyway.

‘Rejection is often life’s way of directing you to the path you’re supposed to be on. If you hang around the barbers long enough, eventually you will get a trim.

‘Travis Binnion, David Unsworth, Ronald Koeman, Duncan Ferguson, Carlo Ancelotti. Thank you for believing in him when others didn’t. 

‘Dominic Nathaniel Calvert-Lewin, England debut scorer and reward for the hard yards done. Tonight belongs to you. Congratulations son. I love you and I am beyond proud.’

Speaking about the goal on Thursday night, the striker said: ‘Obviously it’s a shame here’s no fans here to celebrate and family could have been here. To score on debut it’s the stuff of dreams.

Calvert-Lewin is in electric form this season, scoring ten goals in just seven matches so far

‘Yeah it’s the best one (of the season so far), I’ve worked hard to get here but it’s been long road.

‘I enjoyed the game time and am happy to step in. I’ll be keeping that number 9 shirt and putting it on the mantelpiece.’ 

Calvert-Lewin came into the international break in electric form for Everton, scoring nine goals in his first six games of the season, including two hat-tricks in September against West Brom and West Ham. 

He is in line to make his second international appearance for England when the Three Lions host Belgium in a crucial UEFA Nations League match on Sunday night.
