Former England midfielder Carlton Palmer has hit back at Roy Keane for criticising Aston Villa’s celebrations after securing Premier League survival at West Ham on Sunday.
Sky Sports pundit Keane was not impressed with the ‘over the top’ celebrations in the Villa dressing room after avoiding relegation back to the Championship on the final day of the season.
‘That’s why they never win anything,’ said the former Manchester United captain.

‘Listen I’m delighted for Dean Smith, he made a good point – there were big changes at the club last summer.
‘It was going to take time, they’ve stayed up [and it’s] a big achievement.
‘The celebrations are slightly over the top, but good luck to them.’
But Palmer, who enjoyed spells with West Brom, Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds, hit back at Keane’s comments on Twitter.
Villa players also celebrated on the West Ham picth after securing Premier League survival
The former England international said Villa had every right to celebrate their survival after the difficult few months the club and manager Dean Smith have had.
Smith’s father, who passed away shortly before the season restarted, was a lifelong Villa fan and former steward at the club.
He said: ‘Is Roy Keane for real, Aston Villa Dean Smith celebrate like you have won the Champions League.
‘Promotion last season lost his father to covid they were seven points from safety. Survived on the last day of the season that is cause for one big party in my book.’

The celebrations continued into the night with Dean Smith doing ‘shots’ with Jack Grealish
The Villa celebrations continued into the night with Smith revealing he slept in his training ground office after drinking shots with captain Jack Grealish.
Villa secured another campaign of top-flight football with a draw at West Ham. Grealish had put his side ahead before Andriy Yarmolenko levelled minutes later.
But Watford’s 3-2 defeat at Arsenal meant Villa’s result was enough to stay above the Hornets and Bournemouth, who beat Everton 3-1.
