Carragher slammed for joining thousands of Liverpool fans in title celebrations

Jamie Carragher has been slammed for joining thousands of Liverpool fans in celebrating the Premier League title triumph.

Sky Sports bosses are facing calls to sack the pundit after he flouted advice from his former club and local authorities and attended the party at the city’s Pier Head.

According to the Daily Star, a source close to Carragher saying the former Reds defender followed social distancing guidelines while at the celebrations.

Thousands of fans ignored police advice by descending on Anfield on Thursday night after Manchester City's defeat at Chelsea confirmed the Reds' first top-flight crown for 30 years.

And celebrations continued on Friday evening throughout the city, including near the Liver Building where a firework was aimed towards the structure.

After the Premier League triumph on Thursday, police had pleaded with fans to avoid mass gatherings.

But pictures have emerged on social media of 42-year-old Carragher at the celebrations on Friday – after saying on Sky Sports he would be enjoying a boozy night.

In a video link-up with Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson on Friday, he held a bottle of champagne and said: “Tell me you’re going to get absolutely rotten tonight – like me!

“Come on Jordan. Go for it lad. Enjoy yourself!”

Liverpool Football Club on Saturday released a statement condemning the scenes from Friday night, after Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson had done the same.

It is feared mass gatherings will cause coronavirus to spread and put more pressure on the NHS.

A student paramedic said on Twitter : “We have ex-Liverpool players at pier head, condoning mass gatherings and showing a lack of Respect for Covid-19 Rules. @Carra23 come on mate, should be setting an example.

Another messaged Sky Sports and said: “How can you possibly allow your employee @Carra23 to continue to work for you when he’s today breached lockdown rules and guidelines being with the crowds at Pier Head?”

Sky Sports have yet to comment, while a source close to the former England ace was cited by the Daily Star saying Carragher only went to the celebrations to accompany his son and followed social distancing guidelines.

Mirror Sport has contacted Jamie Carragher's representatives for a comment.
