Celtic seal loan deal for Everton defender Jonjoe Kenny

Celtic beat Burnley to Jonjoe Kenny’s signature as the Everton defender joins on loan until the end of the season after Jeremie Frimpong was sold – but they will now miss out on Liverpool-bound Ben Davies

Celtic have landed Everton’s Jonjoe Kenny on loan until the end of the season.

The 23-year-old full back has attracted interest from Premier League clubs this month but none were able to finalise a deal.

Burnley were among those looking at Kenny, who spent last year on loan at Schalke.

Celtic have moved quickly to land the former England Under 21 international after losing Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen.

Neil Lennon’s side are on a disastrous run of form and find themselves 23 points adrift of Scottish Premiership leaders Rangers.

Kenny leaves after finding game time hard to come by this season, having been reduced to just eight appearances in all competitions.

He could make his debut for Celtic when they travel to Kilmarnock on Tuesday.

Celtic, however now look like missing out on Preston defender Ben Davies.

A deadline-busting £2million move for Davies was close to collapse last night after a shock late move by Liverpool.

Negotiations over a pre-contract agreement with the 25-year-old progressed over the weekend.

And Celtic believed they could tie up a permanent deal before the midnight deadline after another defensive horror show in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to St Mirren.

Hit by a defensive injury crisis, however, Jurgen Klopp is prepared to sweeten a deal by loaning Sepp van der Berg to Preston – with Celtic now set to miss out.

Moves to fill the right-back void left by the £11.5million sale of Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen look more positive.

Kenny was an unused substitute for Carlo Ancelotti in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle.

A permanent move to Burnley has failed to materialise, opening the door to a loan switch to Glasgow as Neil Lennon looks to shore up a porous defence.

The SPFL champions also hope to tie up an agreement with Sheffield Wednesday’s highly rated 19-year-old midfielder Liam Shaw as rebuilding for next season gets underway.
