Chelsea boss Frank Lampard warned three stars ‘not good enough’ after Sheffield Utd shock

Micah Richards has warned Frank Lampard that his options at centre-back are simply not good enough for the club’s aspirations moving forwards as they played their part in Chelsea’s downfall at Bramall Lane. The Blues shipped three goals to their fellow European hopefuls and could drop out of the top four on Monday night if Manchester United and Leicester both record victories.

Lampard’s defensive woes were laid bare in the midweek defeat at West Ham just over 10 days ago and it was a familiar story from the Blues in Yorkshire despite failing to score.

The Chelsea boss has continued to rotate his centre-back pairing with Andreas Christensen the only mainstay.

Kurt Zouma has come back into the side, replacing Antonio Rudiger and to his credit he helped his side earn all three points against Crystal Palace on Tuesday with a last-ditch tackle.

According to former England international Richards, Lampard should consider offloading all three considering they’re struggling to keep opponents at bay.

“Christensen, Zouma and Rudiger, I’m not one to criticise players but for the level they want to go to, they’re not good enough at this moment in time,” Richards told Sky Sports.

“They brought on Rudiger in the second half to sure things up and he ended up costing a goal.

“I can understand Frank’s frustration there.”

Christensen and Zouma struggled to get close to Oli McBurnie and David McGoldrick, who scored three times between them.

Rudiger was brought on at the interval to sure things up but he was at fault for the third goal, putting the ball on a plate for McGoldrick, who had not scored in the Premier League until yesterday.

Graeme Souness claims Lampard will have made up his mind on selling certain players following the dismal performance.

“When he says ‘I won’t forget that tonight’, forget third, fourth, fifth whatever, he said he won’t forget that tonight,” Souness added.

“I think tonight has confirmed his thoughts on some players he wasn’t sure about.

“So I would expect there to be several players that we saw tonight won’t be there next year if he can get them out of the door.

“I come back to it, Chelsea are a team that wherever you go they’ve got quality but that’s not enough to win you games at this level, not when you’re playing against Sheffield United.

“Mentally, physically you’ve got to be bang at it and they weren’t tonight and they were rolled over quite easily by Sheffield United.”
