Chelsea boss Pochettino set to take up transfer frustrations with the board

Football Digest: Pochettino ruthlessly exiles three players from Chelsea HQ

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has yet to clarify his feelings on a swap deal with Juventus that will see Romelu Lukaku offloaded as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Dusan Vlahovic. The ex-Tottenham manager is keen to sign another striker this summer but it is unclear whether the Juventus star is the correct fit for the club at this stage, with other issues also playing on his mind.

The new Blues boss has orchestrated a mass clear-out at Stamford Bridge this summer in a bid to reduce the size of his squad and boost morale within his ranks. Wantaway stars had their exits facilitated, whilst those who were on the fringes of the first team have also been sold to raise transfer funds.

However, despite the positive work on that front, Pochettino has very little to show for his hard work. Chelsea have only welcomed one proven star to their ranks this summer, Nicolas Jackson, and other signings have fallen under the ‘for the future’ category.

Therefore, Pochettino will have the opportunity to vent his frustrations at heading into the 2023/24 campaign with an incomplete squad when he has his say on the Vlahovic negotiations. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Argentine will have the chance to have his say on the striker swap deal in the next few days, with an agreement not entirely imminent.

The chance to review the deal also presents the chance for other issues to be addressed, such as Chelsea’s barebone midfield. Pochettino wanted to build his central ranks around Enzo Fernandez this summer but could head into next season with ‘up-for-sale’ Conor Gallagher as his midfield partner.

Brighton’s Moises Caicedo is his priority in that department and the Blues have seen several offers knocked back for his services, with another bid in the pipeline. The Seagulls are demanding £100million for the services of the Ecuador international, however, Chelsea are yet to make an offer within £20m of that fee.

The lack of a new midfielder is a major cause for concern for Pochettino, with another striker still also a priority – though that can be addressed with Vlahovic. With the 2023/24 season fast approaching, the new Blues boss will definitely feel that his lack of quality in depth should have been addressed before a new campaign was within touching distance.
