Chelsea need to sign a No 10 to get the best out of club-record signing Romelu Lukaku, according to Tony Cascarino. Lukaku has scored just five goals in all competitions for Chelsea since rejoining in the summer. The Belgian, who cost around £97.5million, has missed matches due to injury and, most recently, after testing positive for COVID-19.

Chelsea were held to a goalless draw at Wolves on Sunday, meaning they have won just two of their last six Premier League matches.

Lukaku was absent from the match at Molineux, along with a host of team-mates who have also contracted coronavirus.

Before the game, former Blues ace Cascarino gave his opinion on how Tuchel can get more from his striker once he returns to fitness.

The talkSPORT pundit says Werner is not the type of player who can help Lukaku and says a No 10 in the mould of Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp is what Chelsea need.

“I’ve seen number tens at other clubs that have been pivotal, [Thierry] Henry had Bergkamp, he was a fantastic ten,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.

“Now Lukaku had that with [Lautaro] Martinez at Inter Milan now he hasn’t had that at Chelsea, he’s got players that are not quite the finished article.

“Timo Werner is not a good foil in a partnership.

“He’s very hit and miss as a player, incredible work rate, desire to run in behind and never stops chasing.

“But he doesn’t have the quality of a number ten that I think Lukaku needs.”

In November, during a richer vein of form for Chelsea, Tuchel was asked if his side performed better without Lukaku.

But he insisted that was not the case, responding: “I understand why people say this as people always look for easy solutions.

“People look for one reason and that things go one way or the other. But life is not like this, life is not that easy, and life in a football team is not that easy.

“Maybe, we shine so brightly now because Romelu did the hard work before. He scored some very decisive goals for us already, to bring us in a position where the young players and other players can take over, step in and show their qualities.

“We started strong and we started the season with Romelu. The things he brings when he is in the dressing room, in the building, even when he is injured, he is every day here, positive, determined, he pushes everybody. He is a top professional and a top, top striker.

“He will be super and he is actually, in the moment, very important.”
