Chelsea chief Marina Granovskaia looks set to break her policy on buying players that are over 30.
Thiago Silva is on the brink of joining the Blues on a free transfer after his contract expired at Paris St-Germain.
The Brazilian will sign a two-year deal that will see him earn £100,000-a-week and comes into a defence in need of improvement.
The Stamford Bridge outfit may have finished in the top four but their defence was shoddy – conceding 54 times in the Premier League alone.
Silva has a wealth of experience, winning 20 trophies in his eight years at PSG.
And despite the fact he turns 36 in September, Frank Lampard believes he can still have a huge impact.
That is the verdict from transfer expert Duncan Castles, who believes Granoskaia has flouted her own guidelines on signing players over 30 because of the Blues boss.
During a chat with Ian McGarry on the Transfer Window Podcast, the reporter insisted Lampard has had a major effect on normal proceedings in west London.
"If Thiago Silva comes in, it will be a break with that policy and convention for Granovskaia," McGarry asked.
"What makes Thiago so special that they would be willing to break, or at least compromise, that policy in order to make him what would be one of the highest-paid players at the club?"
Castles replied: "I think it's his quality as a player and his experience at the very top level.
"Leadership, good attitude as a player."
Silva has had his injury worries over the years, though, and some fans have concerns over such a player entering the Premier League.
"There are question marks over his injury record and I think that would be the risk element involved here, because you're taking him, albeit after he's had a season where he's had a lot of rest because the French division shut down early because of COVID.
"He's had rest but you're asking him then to come into the Premier League for the first time at that age with that questionable injury record and an extremely demanding schedule ahead of him, so there's a risk involved there.

"But relative pricing and the specific requirements of the Chelsea defence, there has been a lack of leadership which Lampard has identified.
"There has been a lack of quality and you definitely get both of those by bringing Thiago Silva in.
"And the overall cost of the deal is relatively cheap because you're only paying wages."
