Chelsea do not have a buy-back clause for Tariq Lamptey.
The 19-year-old left Stamford Bridge for Brighton in January in a deal worth an estimated £4m, which left some Blues supporters confused following his impressive performances of late.
The England youth international joined their academy at the age of seven back in 2008, but only made one Premier League appearance during his short spell with the first-team squad last season.
Lamptey has been a regular in the Brighton side since his decision to leave London, and it has only taken 10 appearances to showcase his ability both defensively and going forwards.
The news that the defender doesn’t have a buy-back clause has therefore gone down badly with Chelsea supporters, despite the good form of Reece James and consistency of Cesar Azpilicueta in recent seasons.
Lamptey’s performance was particularly impressive as Brighton beat Newcastle on Sunday, and he was called out for praise by Jamie Carragher.
The youngster then said: "It was a good win for the boys.
"I appreciate all the praise I get and I'm thankful for it all. I just need to keep working hard."
Before adding of his manager’s influence: "He is a fantastic coach for a young player like me to have.
"He has a clear project and he's always speaking to me about what I can do to help the team.
"It really helps when you have someone who believes in you."
When asked about his decision to join in January, he said: “It was a really tough decision to leave as I’ve been at Chelsea since the age of seven and seen it all the way to the under-23s, and then the first team.
