Chelsea are set to pay most of Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s wages should he leave on loan.
The 24-year-old had promised plenty during the early seasons of his career but is now set to leave Stamford Bridge on a temporary basis having recovered from a long-term ligament injury.
Frank Lampard has boosted his squad having had huge financial backing this summer, which has seen the England international slip down the pecking order and push him towards the exit door.
Although Loftus-Cheek is set to follow in the footsteps of Ross Barkley by leaving on loan, the Blues will be forced to pay most of his wages as the deadline approaches.
The Sun have reported that the midfielder is on a mammoth £173,000-a-week at Chelsea.
That is likely to put off Premier League clubs with smaller budgets, which will mean that the sum will have to be split with his parent club – who could pay the majority.
The add that Chelsea might pay £100,000 each week during his time away, and Southampton are believed to be looking at that package before the window closes on Monday.
When asked if Loftus-Cheek will leave, Lampard said: “If it’s right for a player and right for us then that can be possible. At the moment the squad is very big but it would have to be the right situation for us.
“It’s also a slightly uncertain time in terms of what’s going on at the moment – we’re always in the worry of quarantines and isolations, which we had a lot through pre-season.
“We have to prioritise the squad we’ve got and make sure we’re comfortable with that but there is a possibility that a few players could be moving on if it’s right.”

Having already said of the player: “There’s a possibility that Ruben may go out to play games, because I think that would be great for him.
“We hold him in very high regard here, I certainly do, and that could be a good option for him.
“If that’s not the right option, he’ll be competitive in this squad as well, because of the quality that he has, and, hopefully, be a big plus for us.”
