Chelsea’s interest in Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland is no secret. They have reportedly had a bid turned down for the forward and it would be no surprise if they made another approach for him before the window shuts at the end of August.

When you want to sign one of the best players in the world, you are fighting against numerous other teams – usually Barcelona, Real Madrid, and PSG – to secure their signature.

However, this summer, Chelsea are in a unique position that pretty much every other club that could feasibly sign Haaland has their attention elsewhere.

PSG currently have Mauro Icardi as their No 9, with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar on either side of him.

You could argue that they could strengthen through the middle, but their priority is tying their own wonderkid, Mbappe, down to a new contract.

The Frenchman’s current deal expires next year and they need to spend all of their time and money in keeping him at the club before they even think about signing Haaland.

Barcelona and Real Madrid’s reasoning for being unable to sign Haaland is relatively simple. They can’t afford him.

Real Madrid have shown interest in Haaland in the past, possibly as a long-term replacement for Karim Benzema.

But, at the moment, they do not have the money to spend £150million or so on Haaland.

Barcelona are in the same position and – forget buying players – they need to sell players in order to register the likes of Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia, and Memphis Depay.

They are also yet to tie Lionel Messi down to a contract for next season, so coming to an agreement with their talisman for next year is their priority.

Chelsea’s Premier League rivals Manchester City and Manchester United are probably the only two other teams who could sign Haaland.

Man City’s interest in Harry Kane is evident and they would prefer to sign the England international over Haaland this summer.

They have been heavily linked with the striker in the past, with Haaland’s father, Alf-Inge, a former City player.

As too have United, with Haaland compatriot Ole Gunnar Solksjaer at the helm at Old Trafford.

But the Red Devils have already spent over £70m on Haaland’s Dortmund teammate Jadon Sancho and are set to splash around £50m on Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane.

This probably means a £100m-plus deal for the centre-forward is unlikely.

So, with no competition for his signature, Chelsea might never have an easier run at signing one of the world’s best.

The question is whether they can get the deal done to avoid a tug of war with their rivals for the Norwegian in 2022.
