Chelsea face a problem in their pursuit of AC Milan star Theo Hernandez, reports say. France star Hernandez is linked with a move to Stamford Bridge following the injury suffered by Ben Chilwell. England international Chilwell suffered a huge setback in his recovery from a knee injury earlier this week.
Chilwell damaged his anterior cruciate knee ligament during the Champions League win over Juventus in November.
It was thought he did not require surgery and could be back in action in a matter of weeks.
However, it has now been confirmed he will have an operation to resolve the problem and will therefore miss the remainder of the campaign.
Chelsea are therefore set to step up their attempts to sign a left-back to cover for Chilwell’s absence.

Marcos Alonso is the only other recognised player in that position in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
AC Milan’s Hernandez is a reported target but the Guardian claims a deal is unlikely for the 24-year-old in January.
The report says Hernandez would be expensive and difficult to sign midway through the season.
Hernandez has two-and-a-half years left remaining on his contract at the San Siro.

He joined Milan from Real Madrid in 2019 and has already made over 100 appearances for the Italian side.
His tally of 17 goals in that time proves why Tuchel would be keen on his signature.
Chelsea are also interested in Everton star Lucas Digne, who has been frozen out by Toffees boss Rafa Benitez of late.
Chilwell had been in fine form for Chelsea before his injury last month.
The 25-year-old was proving to be a successful attacking outlet for Tuchel, scoring three goals from left wing-back.
But Chelsea are now set to be without the former Leicester star until at least the start of next season.
The Blues confirmed on their official website on Tuesday that Chilwell now has to undergo surgery to heal his knee.
The statement read: “After a knee injury in the match against Juventus the Chelsea medical department, in collaboration with their knee specialist, took the decision to attempt a conservative rehab approach.
“Unfortunately Ben was unable to progress and so collectively the decision has been taken to proceed this week with a surgical repair.”
