Chelsea legend John Terry has labelled West Ham‘s Declan Rice as the best defensive midfielder in world football. The 22-year-old Hammer put on another dazzling display as they saw off Liverpool in dramatic fashion on Sunday, ending their unbeaten run to claim a 3-2 victory.
Chelsea’s weekend was not so dramatic, but certainly disappointing after Burnley fought back to earn an unlikely draw at Stamford Bridge.
Liverpool were therefore given the chance to close the gap at the top of the table, although West Ham’s victory ensured Chelsea retained a buffer.
It was another commanding performance by Rice in midfield as he helped the in-form Hammers to move up to third in the league after 11 games.
His showings have caught the attention of Terry, who has not been shy on sharing his opinions since recently creating a Twitter account.

“Declan Rice is the best in his position in world football. What a player,” said the former England captain.
Terry is currently searching for his first job in football management, with recent vacancies popping up at Aston Villa and Norwich City prompting speculation.
At his old club Chelsea, Terry’s glowing review may put the club’s transfer chiefs on red alert with the January transfer window just around the corner.
The Blues were heavily linked with Rice over the summer although West Ham warded off potential suitors by slapping a whopping £100million price-tag on him.
It was reported at the time that Chelsea could be Rice’s preferred destination if he was to leave the London Stadium, given his history with the club’s youth academy.
He is also known to be close friends with Mason Mount, which was reinforced during the summer due to their exploits at Euro 2020.
Given the Hammers’ recent success and Rice’s integral role in the team, it remains to be seen whether the youngster would still be keen on going in search of a new challenge with Manchester United also thought to be interested.
“This result shows that we’re really in with a good chance of challenging for the top places,” beamed David Moyes after their Liverpool victory.
“I’m hugely proud [that I’ve turned West Ham around]. The way the players have gone about it, you talk about me turning it around, these players were close to relegation. Now we’re pushing for Europe.
“It was a brilliant victory against a really good team.
“We played Thursday night as well, so to come and put on a performance…and the energy, we had to hang in at the end – it was great by the players.”
