Chelsea boss Frank Lampard thinks the solution to his defence problem is Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva and the two parties have been conducting talks over the past few days.
Chelsea need to build a strong foundation to the team after they shipped 54 goals this season – more than any other side in the top half of the Premier League table.
Lampard has been told he must offload some of his defenders if he wants to bring his own men in.
West Ham ace Declan Rice was highlighted as the Blues’ top target but they will struggle to meet his £80million price tag.
Lampard has been looking at other options and he has reportedly settled on Silva, who is out of contract at the end of the season.
The PSG star turns 36 next month and will bring a wealth of experience to a young Chelsea back line.
The Athletic claims talks between the player’s representatives and the west Londoners have been ongoing for several days.
However, there are issues over how long Silva’s contract will be.
Over the last decade Chelsea have only offered two players over 30 the option to remain at Stamford Bridge for longer than a year.
David Luiz, who later signed for Arsenal, penned a two-year extension and Willian turned down a similar offer this summer.
Silva feels that although he has lost some of his pace he would still be able to adjust to the high intensity of the Premier League.
He can go a long way to proving Lampard is right to begin talks with a strong performance in Sunday’s Champions League final.
PSG are through to the European showpiece event for the first time but they are the underdogs against Bayern Munich.
Meanwhile, Silva hints he may remain at the Parc des Princes beyond his current deal ahead of the final.
“The club turns 50 and it’s the last year of my deal,” he said. “I gave everything I could.
“If I can continue to play with the club, we will discuss it and make the best decision.”
