Chelsea reluctant to give Antonio Rudiger preferred loan move this summer

Antonio Rudiger is determined to join Tottenham before Monday’s transfer deadline – but Chelsea are reluctant to sell him to their London rivals.

The Germany defender has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge this season, failing to make it into Frank Lampard ’s last five matchday squads.

Spurs are reportedly interested in signing him on loan before the transfer window closes, with Jose Mourinho keen to add another centre-back to his ranks.

Yet according to The Athletic, Chelsea are reluctant to let Rudiger join Spurs having seen their relationship with the north London outfit sour in recent years.

It is believed the Blues are still furious at losing out to Spurs in the 2017 race to sign Fernando Llorente, who then boss Antonio Conte was desperate to get his hands on at the time.

Llorente instead chose to join their capital foes, which clearly proved a bitter pill to swallow for them.

AC Milan, Inter Milan, Roma and Barcelona are also considering launching an offer for Rudiger before the transfer deadline.

If the 27-year-old does leave Stamford Bridge, Chelsea want him to first protect his market value by putting pen to paper on a contract extension – with just two years remaining on his current deal.

Rudiger has fallen behind the likes of Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori and Andreas Christensen in the Chelsea pecking order this season.

And the arrival of Brazilian ace Thiago Silva has only pushed him further out of the picture in west London.

When asked if Rudiger or Jorginho could leave Chelsea, Lampard recently said: “I don't expect anything in the window, because they are our players and that's a fact.

“There are lots of rumours about those players and others too, so every player would always be a case-by-case situation, and one that would be a happy solution for the player, for myself and the club.”

Rudiger has made 115 appearances for Chelsea since joining from Roma in 2017, scoring six goals and winning the FA Cup and Europa League.
