Chelsea have been told by their former midfielder, Emmanuel Petit, that a better player than Mason Mount could soon be in their ranks. Christopher Nkunku’s prospective arrival may come just in time, too, with Liverpool and Juventus both believed to be sniffing around Mount with time ticking down on his contract.

Now into his fourth season as a Chelsea regular, Mount has been a mainstay of the Blues’ starting XI since breaking through in 2019/20. A solid haul of 11 Premier League goals last term looks like it won’t be matched this campaign amid a backdrop of change at Stamford Bridge, with Thomas Tuchel giving way to Graham Potter in the dugout.

Questions remain over Mount’s future in west London as he approaches the final 18 months of his contract. Talks to thrash out a new deal surely aren’t done yet, but the current standoff has reportedly prompted Juventus and Liverpool to express an interest in signing the 23-year-old.

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly may therefore be wise to put together a contingency plan in case the Reds or the Bianconeri are successful in their transfer pursuit.

Various reports indicate that the plan is already in motion, with RB Leipzig forward Nkunku close to finalising a move to Stamford Bridge. The Frenchman’s prospective £52million switch would go through next summer, providing there are no surprise hitches between now and then.

Arsenal hero and former Chelsea midfielder Petit, who won the World Cup with France in 1998, claims that the Blues may even bag themselves an upgrade if they have to let Mount go before welcoming Nkunku. When asked who was the better player, he told 90min: “Christopher Nkunku!

“He was voted player of the year in the Bundesliga. The boy, without making a sound, is crushing everyone.” Chelsea fans could have had an exciting opportunity to watch Nkunku in action at the Qatar World Cup, although a heartbreaking training injury has ruled him out for the entire tournament.

The 25-year-old scored a staggering 35 goals in all competitions last season, which is more than twice as many as Mount has ever managed, and the Leipzig talisman has continued his stellar form with 17 goals in 23 outings this term. While Nkunku could be on his way next summer, Potter hasn’t completely closed the door on other signings taking place in January.

“I think there is more to come from the team we have and the group we have,” he said. “We’ve had some key players out: [N’Golo] Kante, [Ben] Chilwell, [Reece] James, [Wesley] Fofana. They are key players and a couple of them are replacing key ones who left in the summer.

“[Myself and Boehly] have a regular dialogue anyway. Sometimes you need to reflect, think and analyse. Absolutely, we need to think about what’s happened and what we can do to improve.”
