Chelsea are not done spending just yet, as they attempt to improve on last season’s fourth place finish in the Premier League.
Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner have both arrived, while discussions continue over another big-money attacking arrival in the form of Kai Havertz, while long-serving wingers Willian and Pedro have both left Stamford Bridge.
This is what’s being reported about the comings and goings at Chelsea as Frank Lampard sets about adding to his squad in his first window since the Blues’ transfer ban came to an end, while also ensuring some fringe players are allowed to leave to free up funds.
Chelsea remain in ‘deep discussions’ over Havertz move
Kai Havertz remains a major target for Chelsea, who are continuing to work on a deal to bring the Bayer Leverkusen forward to the Premier League.
According to football.london, fee negotiations are still a major stumbling block, with the London club reluctant to meet the German side’s £90m asking price.
The Express, meanwhile, cite claims from journalist Kevin Palmer that the Blues are in the final stages of negotiations over a move to sign the 21-year-old.
As Palmer writes, “Discussions are focusing on the structure of performance related payments”.
Havertz, who has seven senior caps for Germany, scored 18 goals in all competitions for Leverkusen last season and has 46 goals for the club since making his debut as a 17-year-old back in 2016.
Juve changes could put Emerson move in doubt
Chelsea defender Emerson Palmieri’s proposed switch to Juventus is now in doubt, following the Italian club’s decision to relieve Maurizio Sarri of his duties as manager.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Inter Milan may have jumped to the front of the queue for the left-back as Juve wait to learn whether new boss Andrea Pirlo is keen on bringing Emerson to Turin.
The Italian publication suggests Chelsea’s asking price will drop if they clinch a move for Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, with potential suitors unwilling to spend £30m on a player they know will not be a first-choice at Stamford Bridge.
Emerson was signed for Chelsea by Conte, now in charge at Inter, while he played regularly under Sarri during the Bues’ run to Europa League glory in 2019.
However, the Italy international has found himself out of favour under Lampard, playing just 108 league minutes in 2020.
Ampadu expected to turn down loan move and fight for Chelsea place
Ethan Ampadu has been linked with another season-long loan away from Chelsea after struggling to break into the RB Leipzig team, but the Welsh international is reportedly keen to stay and fight for his place in west London.
According to Goal, Frank Lampard is a fan of the versatile youngster, whose loan switch to the Bundesliga was agreed before the manager took over at Stamford Bridge.
As a result, Ampadu is believed to want to show the boss what he can do before committing to another loan move, and Goal suggests the player hasn’t yet been encouraged to look for a temporary move away.
The 19-year-old played just seven times for RB Leipzig, but got a 90-minute run-out for the Bundesliga side against Tottenham in the Champions League.
Other fringe players are expected to leave on loan, though, with Goal reporting that Armando Broja will join Vitesse for the new season while Trevoh Chalobah is set for a year in France at Lorient.
