Chelsea transfer round-up: Ben Chilwell doubts, Lewis Dunk deal edges closer

The 2019/20 season is over for Chelsea following last weekend’s Champions League exit to Bayern Munich, with the club now turning their attention to the transfer window.

The Blues are now preparing their squad for next season with hopes of rejuvenating their squad, although the financial uncertainty and staggered season-end dates for clubs means that there is an added level of disarray.

However, Chelsea are said to have a few irons in the fire and are hopeful of concluding several deals this summer, alongside potentially moving on a few of their current first-team squad.

We look at all the latest transfer news surrounding the club.

Meret links downplayed

The agent of Napoli goalkeeper Alex Meret has poured cold water on rumours linking the goalkeeper to Chelsea.

The 23-year-old competes with David Ospina for the starting slot in Naples and had been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

The Blues appear likely to move on Kepa Arrizabala and Meret had emerged as a possible target but agent Federico Pastorello has played down any rumours.

“Going from Udinese to Napoli [in 2018], he made a big decision," Pastorello told Italian broadcaster Rai Sport, in quotes carried by football.london.

“Our contact with Napoli has been constant, but someone at his age needs to play. We are willing to go out on loan to play, if necessary.”

Inter have personal agreement for Emerson

Chelsea are prepared to sell out-of-favour wing-back Emerson Palmieri this summer and the player has reportedly agreed terms with Inter.

The Brazil-born Italian international, formerly of Roma, is said to have personal terms in place with the Italian club, with the signing being made at the behest of Antonio Conte.

However, the Daily Mail say that the deal is not yet a formality as the Milanese giants want the Blues to lower their asking price, while relations between Conte and Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia are said to be strained.

Doubt cast on Chilwell move

Chelsea have reportedly set their sights on a move for Leicester defender Ben Chilwell but former striker Tony Cascarino is uncertain over a move.

It is claimed that the Blues may have to pay in excess of £60million to secure the player’s signature and Cascarino thinks that’s too high for the England international.

“Chilwell is a very good player, a very good footballer but I don’t think he’s the greatest defender, as a left-back, which sort of ticks a few boxes that Chelsea are already suffering with, with (Marcos) Alonso at left-back," he told talkSPORT, via Leicestershire Live.

"He’s probably quite guilty of being far better going one way than the other. Also Emerson.

“It’s a lot of money. I watched him against Watford (a 1-1 draw at Vicarage Road in June) and Ismaila Sarr absolutely ran him ragged.

"I was quite surprised how easily he got the better of Chilwell on the day.

“He’s a good footballer and he’s very good creatively going forward. I just think it’s a huge price for someone.”

Blues tipped to secure Dunk

Chelsea are close to securing a deal to land Brighton defender Lewis Dunk for £40m, according to the Sun.

The Blues have been heavily linked with a move for Declan Rice, who Frank Lampard wants to turn into a defender.

But West Ham United do not want to sell their prized asset to their London rivals, forcing Chelsea to look elsewhere.

And the Blues are now edging closer to completing a deal for Dunk, a boyhood Chelsea fan who used to idolise John Terry.
