After going 2-0 down in a game you must win to stay in any European competition, it could feel like everyone is against you.

Everyone except the referee, it seems, when Daniele Orsato bizarrely high-fived Reinildo during Atletico Madrid's Champions League defeat to Porto on Tuesday night. Diego Simeone's side would have at least finished third with a point at the Estadio Dragao.

But a disappointing performance saw them go two goals down after less than half hour. And those frustrations got the better of Reinildo, who left Porto star Otavio in a heap just before half-time.

Appearing to raise his hand to apologise, the referee did not want to leave the left-back hanging and gave him a high-five – leaving many bamboozled. "Confirmed: Daniele Orsato and Reinildo are very good friends," one fan responded.

The Mozambique international did not appear to take the gesture in good spirits, though, walking away from the incident while the other Atletico players looked downcast. With the match ending 2-1 to Porto, the La Liga outfit have been sent crashing out of Europe entirely.

For a side that is renowned for making the top teams sweat in the latter stages of the competition, this is an abject failure for Simeone.

Especially considering the credentials of his opponents, that as well as Porto includes Bayer Leverkusen and Club Brugge – hardly European royalty.

Atletico's humbling means that they will be out of both the Champions League and Europa League before Christmas for the first time during Simeone's 11-year reign.

Elsewhere, Tottenham qualified as group winners after beating Marseille in the last minute through Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Spurs were facing an exit from the competition after going a goal down but wrestled back control in the second-half.
