Chris Sutton believes there are ‘big problems’ at Manchester United following their 1-0 defeat at home to Wolves.

Joao Moutinho scored the only goal of the game late on, with United’s inconsistent season continuing.

United are in seventh place in the Premier League and face a fight to finish in the top four, with Sutton stressing that there is a wider problem at the club, with some players not putting in the required effort.

Sutton claimed that some of United’s players don’t run enough, which is holding the team back

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Sutton said: ‘There are big problems at Manchester United. We knew the problems under Ole and they are trying to change the way they play but there are issues.

‘Some players run, some don’t run and when you strip it all back that is a massive, massive problem for Manchester United.

‘Watching the game tonight and looking at Chelsea-Liverpool it was night and day the difference in quality.’

Rob Green added that at times the United players are unsure what is required of them.

Green noted that at times Rangnick’s team weren’t playing quickly enough, while they also didn’t cause enough problems for Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa.

Green said: ‘I think Manchester United don’t know what is needed of them. They were looking around at each other at times. They were playing slow when they needed to be fast forward. In the second half they had that bit more control but still, Wolves looked comfortable.

‘Apart from that save at the end, Jose Sa was not really tested as much as he should be.’

Micah Richards says the performance of Phil Jones was the only positive for United

On a disappointing night for United, Micah Richards claimed that the only positive was the performance of Phil Jones.

The centre-back was making his first appearance in 708 days, and, although he made an error in the build-up to Wolves’ goal, his overall performance was of a high standard.

Richards said: ‘Phil Jones was the best player for Manchester United today. For all the stick he has been given over the last couple of years, apart from the goal – his header could have been better – but if you watch his all round performance, his positioning, clearances, his confidence he didn’t look like he had been out all that long.

‘In terms of positives for United that was the only one I saw.’

United’s next two games are against Aston Villa – firstly at home in the FA Cup next Monday and then away in the Premier League five days later.
