  • But the 21-year-old’s shirt number at City is still yet to be revealed by the club

Manchester City finally confirmed the signing of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund on Monday morning – but held off on revealing his shirt number.

Haaland will officially join City on July 1 after putting pen to paper on a five-year contract with the Premier League champions, just over a month since Borussia Dortmund accepted a £51million offer for their star striker.

The 21-year-old has now waved goodbye to Dortmund after sealing his switch to City, where father Alf-Inge also plied his trade in the early 2000s.

Man City held off on revealing Erling Haaland’s shirt number despite confirming his transfer

On Monday he was pictured in a City shirt for the very first time before gushing: ‘This is a proud day for me and my family’.

Yet despite posing in the club’s new strip for the 2022/23 campaign, Haaland’s shirt number remains unknown.

City chose not to release their new recruit’s number despite confirming the signing, suggesting they may be waiting for a current squad member to vacate one.

Given he is an out-and-out centre-forward, it would make most sense for Haaland to take on the No 9 – which he wore in his time at Dortmund.

Haaland’s £51million move to City from Borussia Dortmund was finally confirmed on Monday

But City are yet to reveal what number their new recruit will be wearing in the 2022/23 season

The silence over his shirt number may be because City are waiting for Gabriel Jesus to depart

Gabriel Jesus is currently in possession of that shirt, however the Brazil striker is being heavily linked with a departure this summer.

Following Haaland’s arrival Jesus would likely see his playing time reduced next season, meaning a move away from the Etihad appears likely.

Both Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing him, and with only a year to run on his contract City will be keen to cash in while they still can.

As a result, they could well be waiting for Jesus to depart and vacate the No 9 shirt before handing it over to Haaland.

The latter developed into one of European football’s most clinical strikers at Dortmund, scoring an incredible 86 goals in 89 appearances before leaving for City.

‘I have always watched City and have loved doing so in recent seasons,’ Haaland said after finalising his transfer.

‘You can’t help but admire their style of play, it’s exciting and they create a lot of chances, which is perfect for a player like me.

‘There are so many world-class players in this squad and Pep is one of the greatest managers of all-time, so I believe I am in the right place to fulfil my ambitions.

‘I want to score goals, win trophies and improve as a footballer and I am confident I can do that here. This is a great move for me and I can’t wait to get started in pre-season.’

After sealing his move Haaland revealed he has been a fan of City’s style of play for many years
