Cristiano Ronaldo forces Man Utd into January transfer window

Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure has reportedly forced Manchester United to act in the upcoming January transfer window.

The Red Devils announced on Tuesday that the 37-year-old has left the club by mutual agreement with immediate effect in light of his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan, which saw the forward openly criticise the club.

His departure has left United short up-front, meaning the Old Trafford hierarchy will now have to back Erik ten Hag in the January transfer window.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano reports that United’s initial plan was to focus on bringing in a new striker in July. But the Italian journalist said in a tweet that they are “already exploring the market to find a solution in January.”

It comes after it was revealed that the Red Devils saved £17million as a result of Ronaldo agreeing to walk away by mutual consent. The Portugal captain still had eight months left on his deal which would have meant he was entitled to a massive pay-out if United chose to rip up his contract without his agreement.

That means the club can now direct the money they saved towards bringing in some exciting attacking options. Ten Hag currently lacks in the striker department, with his only options being Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

One potential target is Red Bull Salzburg wonderkid Benjamin Sesko. The 19-year-old Slovenian is believed to be high up on Ten Hag’s transfer wish list, having scored five goals already at international level.

Another forward consistently linked with a move to Old Trafford has been Netherlands star Cody Gakpo, who netted against Senegal on Monday. The PSV man was tipped to join United in the summer until talks fell through.
