Cristiano Ronaldo transfer to Chelsea would have "nothing to do with money"

Wantaway Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo would move to Chelsea for football reasons and not financial, claims former Manchester City and Arsenal ace Bacary Sagna.

Ronaldo has been linked with an audacious move to Thomas Tuchel's side, after various reports claimed the Real Madrid legend is looking for a move away from Old Trafford. New United manager Erik ten Hag has strongly refuted any claims that the 37-year-old is unhappy, stating the Portuguese ace's absence is down to "personal reasons".

Nevertheless, the rumours have not gone away, as new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly reportedly met with Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes. And if such a move did ever progress, Sagna does not feel money would play a part in convincing the five-time Champions League winner.

"Ronaldo loves football before anything," the former Arsenal ace said to online casino Lord Ping. "If the project is good and he has a good connection with the manager, then why wouldn't he want to go to Chelsea?

"All he wants to do is play football. It has nothing to do with money – he doesn't need the money!

"When I watch him, he has the enthusiasm of a kid and he just wants to compete at the highest level. At his age, you have to respect that.

"He is an icon and he has changed the sport because of how he trains and how he lives his life off the pitch. Hopefully we will see him competing with a top club next season because he deserves it."

Ronaldo enjoyed a very impressive return to United, netting 23 goals and three assists in 37 appearances in all competitions. Unfortunately, his ageless performances were the only positive for United, as they could only muster a disappointing 6th placed finish in the Premier League.

When it comes to European competitions, Ronaldo has never played outside of the Champions League for Sporting Lisbon, United, Juventus, or Real Madrid. And with United only securing a place in the Europa League, the football world eagerly awaits to see Ronaldo and United’s decision.
