David Alaba tipped for Liverpool transfer in January as cover for van Dijk

David Alaba has been tipped to complete a move to Liverpool in January to help the club smooth over the absence of the injured Virgil van Dijk.

The Austrian defender is at loggerheads with Bayern Munich chiefs after rejecting two offers of a contract extension.

Alaba's current deal is due to expire next summer but he is able to enter negotiations with foreign clubs from the start of the new year.

That has put Liverpool on alert, as they are one of several elite clubs monitoring Alaba's situation.

Jurgen Klopp has been forced to turn to fringe man Nat Phillips and youngster Rhys Williams in recent matches to fill the van Dijk void, with Fabinho and Joel Matip also nursing injuries.

Now ex-Bayern star Mario Basler feels a switch to Anfield for Alaba could suit all parties.

He told Sport1-Fantalk : "The story with Alaba should really end with him leaving.

"Maybe he’ll go to Liverpool. They have big problems with the injury to Van Dijk and the cruciate ligament rupture.

"He’s supposed to be out for a long time, and I think there’s a big need (to strengthen) in the central defender position."

It's been an extremely interesting start to the season for Jurgen Klopp's men.

They got their title defence off to a shaky start as they edged out a seven-goal thriller against Leeds, before going on to conceded seven in a hammering by Aston Villa.

Virgil van Dijk's season was ended by injury in the 2-2 draw at Everton, leaving the title favourites looking far less secure at the back – especially with Alisson's injury worries too.

But there's no slowing down in what is going to be a busy campaign – with Klopp ensuring his men continue at full pace as they bid for more title glory.

Alaba's standoff with his club stepped up a notch when he claimed he was unaware Bayern had taken their second contract proposal off the table until he was alerted by a news bulletin.

Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic responded by insisting their renewed offer came with a deadline which Alaba and his representatives failed to meet.

Since then, reports have circulated that the 28-year-old's agents have held discussions with Real Madrid regarding the prospect of signing a pre-contract agreement in January.

Whether interest from Liverpool could sway the defender is unknown, while Bayern chief Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has conceded the decision is out of the club's hands.

"I don't know [if Alaba will leave]," Rummenigge told Sport Bild . "We had a meeting two weeks ago with his father George and his advisor Pini Zahavi. The conversation was okay, the atmosphere was alright.

"But I have to say, we've been going in circles for months. At some point we have to start planning for the new season. We have to know: Will David stay with FC Bayern or not? A decision is important to us at this point."
