David Beckham was left speechless by Queen’s comment in awkward meeting

David Beckham admitted that he was left unable to speak following a meeting with Queen Elizabeth II back in 2002. The then-Manchester United star was at the height of footballing stardom, shortly before his big-money move to Real Madrid the following year, when he met Her Majesty for the first time during a dinner that swiftly turned awkward.

Beckham’s wife Victoria had arranged a lunch event that featured honoured MBE recipients, as her footballer husband was fresh off a sixth Premier League title win under Sir Alex Ferguson. He was in a classy suit but was not able to keep cool under the pressure once he began chatting with the Queen.

Beckham reflected on the moment during her Platinum Jubilee celebrations last year, before she passed away on September 8 – a year ago today. Queen Elizabeth clearly had a massive impact on the 48-year-old as he looked back on their first meeting and remembered their conversation.

It started with the Queen asking David: “How’s Victoria? How’s the kids?” But the moment soon became awkward as Beckham froze and later admitted: “I couldn’t even answer, it was an incredible moment.”

Beckham will likely remember the interaction that left him speechless despite being one of the biggest names in the country at the time. He paid his respects a year ago by queuing with the British public for more than 13 hours to see the Queen’s coffin.

He was hailed for the classy gesture as he took selfies and chatted with fans he shared the queue with, before wiping away a tear when paying his respects to the woman he clearly has so much respect for when at her coffin.

After Queen Elizabeth’s passing a year ago, Beckham took to social media to pen a heartfelt tribute to Her Majesty. “I’m truly saddened by the death of Her Majesty, The Queen,” the ex-footballer wrote on Instagram. “What an outpouring of love and respect we saw for the Platinum Jubilee for her life of service.

“How devastated we all feel today shows what she has meant to people in this country and around the world. How much she inspired us with her leadership. How she comforted us when times were tough. Until her last days she served her country with dignity and grace. This year she would have known how loved she was. My thoughts and prayers are with our Royal Family.”

As the nation continues to mourn the passing of the Queen a year ago, one of Beckham’s several interactions with her seems to come to the forefront of his mind – the time he lost his ability to speak after being asked about his wife and children.
