David de Gea can recover from horrendous drop in form at Manchester United and is a ‘class act’ – but goalkeeper ‘must be told someone is waiting in the wings to come in’, warns Rio Ferdinand
- David de Gea made a number of high-profile errors for Man United in 2019/20
- Ole Gunnar Solskjaer kept faith in his first-choice keeper despite his blunders
- The Spaniard is expected to face competition from Dean Henderson next season
- And Rio Ferdinand believes that is paramount if de Gea is to re-discover his form
Rio Ferdinand insists David de Gea can re-discover his form in a Manchester United shirt, but believes he will need to be warned of competition for his place.
The Spaniard endured a torrid time between the posts during the 2019/20 season and made a number of high-profile errors, including in the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer retained faith with De Gea despite his blunders, but after a productive loan spell at Sheffield United Dean Henderson is expected to challenge him for the no.1 jersey.

But Ferdinand believes De Gea can recover again, having come through a difficult start following his move from Atletico Madrid in 2011 to become a four-time Player of the Year at Old Trafford and a model of consistency following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
‘De Gea has the ability to get back to where he was,’ Ferdinand told TEAMtalk.
‘He’s shown over the years that he is a class act. He can now have a break for a few weeks and come back with his focus renewed.
‘He has the mentality to come back and reach his levels again. We’ve seen time and again how good he can be. I think he can still be a big player for United, but he has a point to prove again now. He has had tough times before and has come back.

But Ferdinand said he will need to be warned of competition for his place for that to happen
‘He’s a great goalkeeper and over the years he has been fantastic for United. He was player of the year four out of six years or whatever it was, but if you are not producing the goods over an extended period of time you have to be told and there has to be someone waiting in the wings to come in.’
But while De Gea may face competition for his spot, team-mates like Bruno Fernandes have begun nailing down their respective spots.
The Portugal international has already become a talismanic figure at Old Trafford since his move from Sporting Lisbon in January, and Ferdinand praised him for having the ability to change the side with his mere presence.

‘Fernandes has been a breath of fresh air for the team. Where he has been great is unlocking the imagination of the team,’ Ferdinand added.
‘You see Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Mason Greenwood, and the minute Fernandes get the ball, they are off, they know their chance is coming. He doesn’t need a second invitation to deliver that pass.
‘That’s what top players do. They change a team and a club with their presence, and we have seen that with Fernandes at United.’
Ferdinand also praised the talismanic presence of Bruno Fernandes since his January arrival
