De Jong ‘would consider’ a move to Bayern in blow to Man Utd

Manchester United's hopes of finally landing Frenkie de Jong have taken a major hit – after a new report claimed that the Dutchman would prefer to move to Bayern Munich.

Erik ten Hag is desperate to reunite with his former Ajax general at Old Trafford, but De Jong is reluctant to quit Barcelona this summer – even though the Catalan club appear to be quite keen to offload him.

United have finally reached an agreement with Barcelona over a fee for De Jong's services, but it remains to be seen if the club hierarchy can persuade De Jong to move to the Premier League. There is also an issue between De Jong and Barcelona in relation to deferred wages – but United could still end up missing out on De Jong even if that is resolved as the Barca man appears to favour a move elsewhere.

According to a new report from SPORT, De Jong would be interested in a potential switch to Bayern Munich. The Netherlands international knows the club's style of play, and Germany's proximity to De Jong's home country would also appeal to the coveted playmaker.

Bayern, unlike Manchester United, would also be able to offer De Jong the Champions League football that he craves, while the German champions are on the cusp of bringing one of De Jong's closest friends, Matthijs de Ligt, to the Allianz Arena.

Although a switch to Bavaria would be De Jong's preferred option, it's unclear if Bayern would actually be interested in rivalling United for the Barcelona man's signature. Chelsea are also admirers of De Jong, but the report claims that it would take a 'sensational offer' to convince the former Ajax ace to move to London.

Ten Hag wasted no time in identifying De Jong as his top summer transfer target, but the Manchester United chief has seemingly conceded that he is willing to move on if a deal cannot be struck soon. He told The Mirror: "We're looking for a player who can play in the holding midfield position, but it has to be the right one."

And the Dutchman even suggested that he could promote from within in his search for a new holding midfielder if a deal cannot be done for De Jong.

He added: "There are not many in that position capable of the level we demand. When we can’t find him, we have to deal with the players in our squad now and we will develop one in that position. "We need the right player. We have a list and we will strike the moment the player is available.
