Duncan Ferguson parked his hardman image to advertise vegan croissants in his new role as Forest Green Rovers manager – despite their struggles on the pitch.

Everton fans were quick to respond to the social media clip in which former striker tucked into the pastry, then insisted that he'd be happy to eat them at home.

He began: "Big Dunc Ferguson here for Forest Green, look what I've got, I've got some lovely vegan croissants called La Boulangere! I think that's how you pronounce it."

Going on to say when trying one: "Yeah, it's nice that! They're very nice in fact, quite nice that. I think I would yeah (have one with his breakfast)."

Not used to seeing their former striker and interim boss in such a company role, Everton fans were left scratching their heads.

One Twitter user replied: "He's 100% resigning this week." A second said: "If it’s good enough for Dunc… I'll have some!"

A third said: "Big Dunc loving the vegan life." A fourth asked: "How’ve they got Big Dunc doing this for Christ Sake."

A fifth said: "What are you doing to our Dunc?" A sixth concluded: "If big Dunc says we are all vegans now then we are all vegans."

On the pitch, Ferguson has drawn two of his opening eight games as manager, while losing six, with Rovers sitting bottom of League One.

One moment of positivity came as Charlie Savage scored his first senior goal against Bristol Rovers, with dad Robbie reacting on BT Sport.

With the studio delighted, Savaged punched the air screaming in delight: "My boy."

He continued: "Go on my boy! Yes! What a goal, when I see it!" Going on to add: "Class man, all he's been through do you know what I mean, so proud of him."
